Icelandic skyr [pronounced skeer] is a cultured dairy product specifically from Iceland. Not only is it thick and creamy, but it is also high in protein with vitamins and minerals.
In search for some yogurt I decided to steer away from the more popular and basic yogurts like Chobani and went for something I've never tried. As I was going through the yogurt section I came across siggi's, and what caught my eye right away was the word Icelandic. Having been to Iceland before I was down to try something Icelandic, and well, maybe I was also just missing my Iceland trip and wanted to feel connected to the country. Either way I went ahead and bought the Icelandic cream-skyr whole milk yogurt with honey. Since trying that specific siggi's yogurt it's become my favorite go-to to buy at the grocery store. Just recently I've tried the vanilla nonfat yogurt which wasn't as silky smooth as the whole milk honey version, but still good. So if you find yourself at the yogurt aisle of the grocery store make sure to pick a siggi's up and give it a try. Filipino Adobo is an easy dish that is a classic favorite for many Filipinos. Although there are few ingredients to this dish, it takes some calculating to get the right flavors. Ingredients:
Chicken Garlic Soy Sauce Vinegar Water Pancit is a classic, simple Filipino noodle dish. If you haven't had Filipino food this is a good dish to start out with. Ingredients:
Thin glass noodles Chicken breast Garlic Onion Soy sauce Chicken broth Black pepper Carrots String beans Lemon (add at the end when plated) As a Filipina who loves eating her mom's home cooking, I wanted to learn how to make the native food that my mom makes. Since my mom doesn't follow a recipe and cooks by tasting and adjusting I had to do the same. She gave me the ingredients and an estimate of how much she uses for each ingredient and from there I had to taste and adjust the flavor. There ARE variations of Filipino spaghetti, but the elements that make it Filipino are the hotdogs and sweetness that goes into the spaghetti. I personally am not a big fan of the hotdogs in the spaghetti, which is why I didn't include it in the Filipino spaghetti that I made. I've listed the ingredients below (without measurements) just so you can get an idea of what Filipino spaghetti is like. Ingredients:
Spaghetti noodles Hunts pasta sauce (traditional/four cheese) Jufran banana ketchup (I like the spicy one) Red bell pepper Onions Ground meat (pork or beef) Hotdogs (sliced) Olive oil Salt & Pepper Sugar Grated cheese to top at the end (I decided not to add any to mine) What do you do with extra ripe bananas? Make banana bread of course! I followed this easy recipe online and baked myself some banana bread. Ingredients are listed below! Ingredients: 3 ripe bannans 1/3 cup melted butter 1 tsp baking soda Pinch of salt 1/2 cup of sugar 1 large egg (whisked) 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1. Mash the bananas until smooth 2. Mix in melted butter, baking soda, salt, sugar, vanilla extract, and egg 3. Mix in the flour 4. Transfer onto loaf pan or deep (conventional oven safe) glassware
This was an easy to make recipe for crab rangoon that I found online. The only changes I made was with the filling since it was a little bland for me. The original recipe didn't say to season the filling (I added salt and pepper to taste) and it was missing some flavor for me, so I added some honey to it until it satisfied my taste buds. I also decided to bake the crab rangoon as opposed to the usual deep fry. You can follow the recipe below! Ingredients: 1 block of cream cheese 1/2 cup of mayonnaise 3-4 chopped green onions Honey Salt & pepper 1 egg 1 tbs water Wonton wrappers 1. Combine and mix the cream cheese, mayo, & green onions together. Then continuously add drops of honey and mix until it satisfies your taste buds. Add salt and pepper to taste. 2. Whisk together the egg and water. Spread out the wonton wrappers and brush the egg wash on all four sides of the wrapper. 3. Place a generous amount (about 1 tsp) of filling in each wonton wrapper 4. Fold wonton wrappers - first pinch together two corners, then fold up the other two corners to create a closing. Make sure to pinch any open air sockets. 5. Prepare a baking pan with aluminum foil and spray on cooking oil to avoid sticking. Before placing the the crab rangoons on the pan make sure to brush them with egg wash. Bake each batch for 18-20 min on 350°F Let me know below if you try this recipe! Did you make any changes? How did yours turn out?!
